So it starts

So, this is my first post on this blog and I am excited to be starting it.  I am planning on writing about issues with the environment, including but not limited to ways we can reduce our negative impact on it.  This is a passionate topic for me and has been for quite some time.  I owe it all to my older sister, she is an avid environmentalist and outspoken planet lover.  She ignited this passion within me for the environment and it has been a big part of my life ever since.  I started out with recycling, then it progressed to composting, and now I have adjusted my daily life to ensure that I reduce any negative impacts I could have on our planet.
I know others also notice the drastic changes in the weather, air quality, and the overall transformations in our environment.

  1. Interesting! I'm looking forward to your posts. I could learn a thing or two about saving the planet. I believe small steps can lead to big changes.

    1. Small steps are still steps none-the-less, so every little bit helps. :)

  2. Hello. I'm always interested in learning ways I can reduce my impact on the environment as well. Do you have any insights on why we don't have any glass recycling here in Las Vegas? I don't know the exact number of beer bottles and other glass containers that are sold and emptied out each year here in the valley, but I bet it's a lot. As far as I know, all this glass just ends up in our landfills. Or am I mistaken? Maybe you know something about this?

    1. To the best of my knowledge Las Vegas does recycle glass, well glass bottles/jars specifically. Since glass is able to be repeatedly recycled, it is a wonder why some places do not recycle glass. Some argue that glass is expensive and not energy efficient to recycle, while others say it is easy to recycle. So that part is debatable, however, there are certain glass products that are non-recyclable. I would guess that because of how they are made (mirrors for example), the process of recycling them is more difficult. Since they have a reflective coating, they are unable to be recycled the same way a glass bottle could be. The reason other types of glass are unable to be recycled are due to the fact that different types of glass are heated to different temperatures to liquefy it. Making it to where the glass can be reused. So mixing bottle glass and mirror glass would make the end product unusable.
So in short, Las Vegas does recycle some glass (bottles and jars) like most places do but there are still places out there that do not recycle glass. Glad you brought this up though.
Here it is stated that glass is taken: http://site.republicservices.com/site/las-vegas/en/pages/recycling.aspx
